Tea Consumption

According to Traditional Home magazine “most Brits prefer PG Tips packed in pyramid shaped teabags.  Although I’m not British, I enjoy PG Tips most mornings (that and London Cuppa).  Americans reach for the smoother, more subtle flavor of Lipton, the best-selling tea in the States”.  I grew up in Canada where Red Rose and Tetley tea were favorites.

It was also mentioned that Brits average three cups of tea per day, as compared to three cups a week for Americans.  What!  That was a surprise to me – I drink an average of 4-5 cups a day.  Of course, there are many (like hubby) who drink coffee exclusively.

If you look at some of the stats on tea consumption on sites such as Wikipedia (2009) you’ll see United Arab Emirates as #1, Ireland #3, United Kingdom #7 and Canada and United States way down the list at #62 and #69.  China didn’t even make the top twenty (#33).

Now I’m curious to know how many cups of tea you drink each day.  Please see the poll on my sidebar.

I'm never sure whether to calculate tea consumption by the mug-ful or by the teacup-ful. My morning tea is in a china mug, which would equal about 1.5 teacups. If I have tea in the afternoon, sometimes it's in a mug, sometimes I'll fix a small pot of tea and use a teacup. At night it's generally in one teacup.

A very pretty blue teaset. Love reading the statistics and surprised by the #1.

You know I don't think I've ever tried PG tips. When I finish the giant box of Tetley breakfast tea, I was given as a gift, I should buy a box of PG tips. I'm pretty sure they sell it at my grocery store.

I'D say I average at least 2 cups a day and sometimes more!

Right now I'm drinking PG tips. I see the grocery stores here are carrying it now. I always had to buy a suppy on my trips before. I also like Rose tea and Taylors of Harrogate Yorkshire Gold. Its a strong tea so I don't brew it as long as the others. Interesting post! Beautiful blue teaset. Have a great week.

I took your poll and was surprised at how many cups a day people really do drink of tea. You have presented a lovely blue tea set.

Any local Brits I've met seem to think PG Tips is the only real tea!

Hi, Maureen
I usually drink 1 cup in the morning and 1 in the evening. But that's just my 'normal' intake. Some days it's more and that's just hot tea. I LOVE sweet ice tea in the summertime, too! So some days it could be 4-5 cups! There must be a little 'Brit' in me somewhere! :)
