Pu-erh - What a Surprise

I’ve heard so much about this tea, most of it good.  On the negative side, I’ve heard that it’s an acquired taste.  I’d only tried Pu-erh once before.  I shouldn’t say tried - I brewed it, but didn’t actually sip the tea because I couldn’t get past the extremely earthy fragrance.

A while ago I posted about a company called Tea Vivre.  The tea samples they sent to me were wonderful, high quality tea, but due to my previous experience with Pu-erh, I was reluctant to sample their Mini Tuocha.

These are small cakes of ripened Pu-erh tea flakes.  They are individually wrapped and the little cakes of tea are shaped like birds nests.  They can be aged for many years, like fine wine.  The package said that these were produced in May 2007.

What a surprise – this is nothing like the Pu-erh from my first experience.  The flavor is very mellow and I did not find it too earthy.  It was interesting to read on the company website that this tea is served after large meals since it breaks down fat (may be helpful for weight loss).

I’m glad that I finally sampled the Ripened Aged Pu-erh Mini Tuocha.  This could easily become a favorite.  Have you tried it yet?

I have tried some from another vendor before and it *was* very earthy, as I recall, but I liked it!

When I first started getting into tea I had high blood pressure and a Chinese friend recommended the little toucha's of Pu-erh. It wasn't the highest quality, but I soon learn to like it. I moved onto other teas, but have just recently returned to Pu-erh and am truly loving what I am tasting now. I have loved it lately with ginger, yummy!

I'm so happy you have found a Puerh that enjoy!

I simply love Puerh! Yes, it's a acquired taste, but I have discovered if you explore enough, you'll find a tea you can enjoy in every tea category.

When I was in Taiwan, I experience the most amazing cup of dark black Puerh tea which warmed my entire body as it went down. Honestly, I felt like the nutrients went right into my blood stream just like a IV. I had never experienced tea like this before. In my book, Puerh has amazing healing properties which we all can benefit from.

Blessings, Darlene

Yay! There is a great difference in ranges in Pu Erh, as you are discovering. I find quite a difference in harshness between the naturally aged ones and the "accelerated" ones.

I'm glad this Pu Erh experience was much better!

This tea is worth discovering and you have so many different ranges to find out!

I really appreciate this tea and yes it's an acquired taste, but as you could experience... it is worth it, not only for the pleasure of discovering new flavours, but for its health benefits!

Pu Erh tea is great to lose weight! It accelerates your metabolism, allowing you to burn fast much faster and build muscle.

Moreover, it is great to drink after heavy meals, as it dissolves excess acidity and aids digestion. It can also ease headaches after a night out!

Who knew this tea could bring so many health benefits?! Have you tried other varieties since your last experience?
