How Not To Bake A Cake

Having a bad hair day is nothing compared to having a bad baking day.  I decided to make a chocolate pound cake this morning.  It has been a while since I used this recipe, but I should have caught on a little sooner.  For instance, why didn’t I acknowledge the fact that there was not much head space in the pan after pouring in the batter.  Where did I think it would go?

As you can see my pan was not quite the recommended 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan.  It looks like I baked a second cake on the floor of my oven.  I guess the moral of this story is to stay close to the kitchen, but even if I had witnessed the batter bubbling over, I’m not sure trying to dump some out at that point would have been a good idea.

I’m not usually such a ditzy baker and people do ask for my recipes all the time.  I guess it was just a bad baking day.

The good news is that the cake turned out just as moist and rich tasting as usual.  And from now on I’ll be checking the dimensions of the pan before I begin to bake.

  2. Oh I am so glad your cake turned out OK. I just hate it when something runs over in the over. What a mess to clean up.

  3. Oh you poor thing. I just hate messes in the oven!! But, I'd do it just to have a taste of that cake. It does look yummy.

Thanks for visiting my blog Life in Wakefield. If I find out what Maureen means I will let you know. I bet it may be in one of those baby name books.

A story about Maureen O'Hara. My daughter and I took a bus tour in ireland in 1996. We didn't know any others on the bus. It was drizzling rain when we got to the Blarney Castle but we braved the wetness to go climb up to the Blarney stone. When we all returned the bus driver (who was a real delight and let us do special things not scheduled) announced that one of our passengers was a friend of Maureens and Maureen had come to Blarney from her home there in Ireland to pick this friend up and let her visit a few days. Well, blow me down. If we had stayed put in the bus we could have seen her.
